About Us
"We need people to know that food comes from the soil and not from the shops" - Christina Kaba.
Moya Wekhaya (herein referred to as Moya) is a cooperative located in Khayelitsha, Western Cape that was founded by a group of elders, which consists of 11 members in 2014 and got registered in 2015 under Christina Kaba. Moya aims to provide high-quality fresh vegetables to its customers by producing organic crops. Organic farming aims to create a more environmentally friendly and sustainable food production system that focuses on soil health, biodiversity, and consumer health. Instead of competing with other farmers or community gardens within the area, Moya is mainly focused on the quality and pricing of our products. The cooperative specialises in produce such as pak choi and tsat soi, lettuces, sweet potatoes, potatoes, a variety of radishes, golden beets, sugar snap peas, table celery, fennel, red and green cabbages, carrots, turnips and kale. In winter - broccoli, cauliflower, and broad beans. Moya provides mentorship opportunities to university students in their final year of completion who might need agricultural practical exposure as a pre-requisite for completing their qualifications. We pride ourselves in equipping graduates in the field of agricultural science with 2 years’ work experience, within the farm. Moya further has a vision of owning a pack-shed and transportation for distribution purposes. The pack shed, Hlumani, which means “grow” will be beneficial to all of Moya micro-farmers by assisting them run efficient operations in terms of cleaning, packaging, storing and cooling of produce in cool rooms whilst waiting for produce to be distributed to the end users. Hlumani is designed to empower Moya farmers by helping them sell their organic fresh produce directly to the market. The hope is that this approach will benefit both the farmers and consumers by increasing revenue for the former and providing affordable, healthy options for the latter.
